I kinda agree with this as sometimes, I like to make something scary but cannot simply because young people could be watching. I wish you could mark a project as scary so when someone attempts to view it it will warn them before use and if they still continue and get scared, it is their fault. Not the Scratch teams fault.

No, definitely not. Projects on the site need to be appropriate for everyone, so any project that has jump scares or other content not safe for all ages will be unshared regardless of warnings.

What about an override but only for students under that teacher? Although it shouldn't be too much of a problem since if my teacher prevents me from seeing an inappropriate project, class projects are unlikely to be inappropriate. Support for this.

No support. Scratch was designed for everyone to use. If something isn't okay for a kid to see, it shouldn't be on Scratch. All of Scratch is “Kid mode”, since it is a kid-friendly site.

The truth is, even if we did have a ‘kid mode’ then people would just bypass the security. Because said ‘kids’ will bypass parental protection on say, the TV.

Besides that, if you really want to make something not for the entire community to see, you should use a different programming language and post it on a website.

Splitting Scratch into kid mode and adult mode would be about the same as splitting it into proprietary mode and open-source mode. That would completely break the idea of scratch.

We're thinking about something like this, but this idea is only being floated around for the upcoming student/educator account system where the teacher may not want NFE'd projects accessible to their students at all. You guys won't be affected.

The reasoning of applying this idea to the student/teacher accounts but not necessarily normal accounts is the issue on what some will consider to be okay for kids on the Scratch website - that line is more conservative-heavy in the classroom environment, but not so much outside of the classroom environment where the position of this line can vary between different cultures and backgrounds.

The tricky part would be trying to figure out what happens if someone with a student account makes a project that ends up being NFE'd that would cause it to be unviewable by their classmates and teacher, a big issue especially if the project is part of a classroom assignment.

Oh wow, a Scratch team member actively knows about NFE projects, but the exact same Scratch team refused to make a 13+ version of the website because “Scratch is designed to be for kids”?

Okay, so we know that the Scratch team is against NFE projects. Or at least Harakou is.

I think what cheddargirl means to say, is that rather than adding a NFE for age appropriate projects, it will be for school appropriate projects. This is so that someone isn't invited onto scratch for education, and then plugs in some headphones and watched someone else's project, which is just a couple frames and sounds cobbled together into a video.

Although, I would like this to stay on-topic, and be about kid-mode, not school-mode.

Not that I support kid mode any more that I ever had.

Here's the reality: What scratch won't let you post, you are allowed to post anywhere else on the web. Adding an adult/teen mode to scratch is like adding blood and gore to Minecraft. It's not happening. (Though I wish the adult YouTube content of Minecraft would die away, because that is pure stupidity.)

No support because irun into a lot of kids younger than 11, including me, the site is 8-16. Scratch IS for kids, and I don't think it's necessary to block kids (like me) from the actual site and make under 11 version of it.. It just seems unfair. I'm sure some other kids under 11 would support, and I respect that. But I don't, and probably cause I can handle violence and bad words (my mom says bad language is OK unless I copy the words), and the reasons above.

Yes, there are plenty. Every project with an animated thumbnail is marked NFE, by the way. And there are plenty of those. NFE means that it doesn't appear on the front page and rarely in the search results. There's no easy way to find out if a project is NFE though. As of now NFE projects aren't hidden from anyone, they are only hidden from the front page so they're harder to access.
