Nice. I'm currently updating the interface, now that I have most of the bugs sorted out. Can someone thoroughly test out saving and opening projects, though? Right now, I'm not sure custom blocks work so well after the second save.

TO PEOPLE ON LINUX: I am currently relying on you to test for bugs on Linux distros, at least until I clean out my other computer. Therefore, I would like it if EVERY bug would be reported. I already know the one to get no costumes/backgrounds on a sprite and am currently fixing it (although it is pretty cool).

Has anyone tried running Whiskers or just Scratch 1.4 using RoarVM?

Edit: Nevermind… It doesn't work on windows without admin permissions.

I tried opening and closing my square project above - apart from being slow the 1st time - its seems to work relaiably but will test some more.

I did notice that you have introduced new control structures that are not in Scratch 2.0

I'd suggest disabling these until you are out of alpha as they could distract from the concept of a Scratch 2 clone (but programmed in lovely Squeak and not nasty Flash)

But of course - its your baby

Simon

I might add an option to enable them (they might be disabled by default). That should work

Sounds like the same thing that happens when you click on exit on the 2.0 offline editor! Is it not a bug, instead rather an intended feature!?

Just kidding.

I'll fix it ASAP. That can't be good.

ARGHH, don't even get me started on that. I run a Windows 10 OS, on hardware that's meant for Windows XP. The results are NOT good.

If I could get my own way, then the only Windows computer in our house would be one running Windows XP on hardware that's meant for Windows 10.

Are you serious?
Windows XP is good but Windows 10 is waaay better.

Use [[]joking] instead of [joking|.

EDIT: That renders as [joking].

Whiskers: Scratch 2.0 for Incompatible Devices

Slightly off-topic but I think important, a couple of comments earlier in this thread need correcting.

liam48D: Yeah, that's one of the tough things with Squeak.. it's graphics screen is really low definition.

This turns out to be wrong. The resolution of Squeak graphics is exactly the resolution of your display. The bits per pixel is by default the same as your display, though it can be beneficial sometimes to use its ability to use any of 2/4/8/16 or 32 bpp. Now, perhaps you were actually thinking of Scratch, rather than Squeak; the stage size is indeed fairly small but this is purely something decided when it was originally designed. In principle one could make it much larger, though then there is a problem about where to fit the palettes and script area. Unless of course one has a 27" 5K iMac to hand, when pretty much anything fits on the screen.

CatsUnited: Also no vector grahpics. You might be able to have the sound editor, but that could lag quite a bit.

This also turns out to be incorrect. Squeak has had vector graphics for a while now; since around the last century in fact. Take a look at OpenCroquet - in wikipedia for example - or watch a video or two about it on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_luwx3HdtbQ&list=PLE781527A1DD306F4&index=1 is one example.) That's Squeak. Likewise take a look at Terf from 3dicc.com - also Squeak. Or there's Nile/Gezira; watch a video about it at http://tinlizzie.org/~bert/Gezira.mp4

And why would the sound editor lag? Even on the original Pi B with the original plain interpreter VM (rather than the current dynamic translation VM) the Squeak sound editor worked perfectly nicely. Heck, it worked perfectly well on ancient Acorn Risc PC's back in 1996!

yes. the reason why the squeak graphics display seems low definition, though, it that there is no subpixel antialiasing, which makes everything look low-definition, including text. As for the sound editor, though, that is about halfway implemented and is pretty fast.

also, back to the graphics screen, and more specifically, the stage: I actually got stage resizing to work partly a while back. I just needed the sprites to resize, which I had found a way to do yesterday. Now, I think I could share the code in a few months, after a few tests. This might help in the case of HD screens, where the stage looks TINY.

It's currently under the Scratch Source Code License, but internally, it's BASED off of the GPLv2 license
