Hammer - Portal 2 authoring tools
This is about Hammer!!
In hammer, you can create (much) more advanced test chambers! There is the perpetual testing initiative too, which you can import test chambers from there into Hammer, and make it much more advanced. It is more difficult, but you can create amazing chambers!
Like defective turrets, underground themes, overgrown themes, behind-the-scenes themes, wheatley themes, and much more!
Some help on creating test chambers!
Hammer is what the professionals use, to create the chambers in Portal 2.

I tried using it for a while, but it's too advanced for me: Perpetual Testing Initiative all the way!

I make Hammer maps for Half-life 2, it's still the Source engine, but Portal 2 retail has a different build from Half-life 2, so it might take some re-learning from me to get used to it.

For Portal 2, you need the Portal 2 Authoring Tools from Steam. wheres the game?!! where do i play this?!!!
For any other Source game, go to “path/to/game/in/steam/bin/hammer.exe”.

bump !
This is my favorite Hammer map -> http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=414003619 by josepezdj. I've been meaning to learn Hammer, but I don't have as much free time as I used to.

Does anyone know of any good sharing sites other than Steam?
I might start working with Hammer again, but I'd prefer not to give away my Steam name.

Worldportals are probably some of the best entities in the entire Portal 2 SDK. >Put 2 worldportal entities down inside a room.
>Forgot lighting.
>Thought it was good.
My first experience.
They're like regular portals, only no borders and they can be as big or small as you want.
(Antichamber, anyone?)
Anyways, my first experience with Hammer went something like this (in greentext because that's apparently how the internet does this):
>Be me about 1-2 years ago
>Get bored, look around Portal'sbin/ folder
>Find hammer.exe
>Launch it
>“Select Game Configuration”
>CS:S looks cool, click that
>Get an error for not having CS:S
>Pick Portal instead
>See a bunch of confusing stuff
>Try to make a map
>SEVERAL errors
>Look up a tutorial on YouTube
>10-20 minutes later, “I'm getting the hang of this”
>Make a small room with a couple lights
>“Oh cool, this works!”
>“Wait, where's my portalgun?”
>Realize I need an entity for that
>Make one
>Begin portaling around for about 5 minutes
>Make the map bigger
>“Woah, portals themselves have an entity, too?”
>Place portals everywhere (with different linkage IDs)
>WHEEEEEE
>Look around other entities
>All HL2 stuff is there, as well as some weird stuff
>“npc_ichthyosaur”
>Place some guns and NPCs around an ichthyosaur
>Load game hoping for dinosaur fight
>Dinosaur doesn't load, give up and use other stuff
>Around 3 hours later, learn more cool stuff
>Buttons, timers, logic, triggers, and more
>Thus began my adventure into editing in Hammer

Slightly irrelevant: If your map includes world portals as a gimmick, your map probably sucks. Like, period, end of story.
I haven't seen a single good map on the workshop that uses world portals besides Penrose, and it doesn't use them as a dumb gimmick so it doesn't count - actually uses them as a test element. And it's a great map series too, you should check it out haha

I Does anyone know of any good sharing sites other than Steam?would recommend thinkingwithportals, but it's dead. There's no other communities out there afaik because Portal 2 is somewhat of a dead game.
I might start working with Hammer again, but I'd prefer not to give away my Steam name.
There's no harm in giving out your steam name afaik

Super huge bump, but the Portal 2 authoring tools come with various instances for stuff like observation rooms, entry/exit elevators, etc. There should be an instance for Wheatley's monitor, and the studio that contains him. You need to name the monitor instance and give it an input to open. Does anyone know how to create a wheatley screen? I've tried and nothing worked…
I should also mention that you use the entity func_instance for all of this.
