Third Assignment:

A new Scratcher has asked you to help them with a game that they have created! Its called

The Amazing Adventures of the Emperor CATFISH!

It includes 2D Graphics where a fish is wandering through the ocean looking for secret seeweed…

He say's that he has this base idea but he can't think of anything else to add to his project and plot. How do you help him?

I would give this response to the user

Hi there!

I recommend adding some more details about what happening. For example, how does he (the fish) become/meet the Emperor Catfish. If he becomes the emperor Catfish, what does he do as the empire? If he is just meeting the empire, what happens at the meeting? What does the empire do?

Those are a few of my ideas, that maybe you could answer in your project. Anyway, for more ideas, I recommend seeing the project ideas forum at https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/9/ . There, you can request ideas, or give ideas. To post there, simply press the “New topic” button, type your subject, type your message (be sure to be specific about what you're looking for: What kind of project, what ideas do you have, and what kinds do you want?) and press post! Soon enough, some Scratchers should give you some ideas!
. I guess that would be WAY over the character limit, but I'd try for something along the lines of that.

You can use multiple comments to answer someone's question . I'm not putting a limit for this exercise.

The New Scratcher replies “How do I make the actual game better though… What should happen when the Emperor touches the seaweed.?”

So… the goal is to get to the seaweed? If the goal is to get to the seaweed, then when it touches the seaweed, then, if you want, you can add an ending animation. What was the Emperor's goal when he went to hunt for the seaweed? If you were the Emperor, what would you do when you achieved that goal? Have an animation of the Emperor doing just that! If you want it to die when you touch the seaweed, in most games like this, it would move the character back to the beginning, and you'd have to find the seaweed over again. If it is none of these, please explain further. Also, if you have started the game, it would help if I could see what you've done so far, so that I'll have a better understanding. Also, you can get a wide variety of ideas in the project ideas forum (I gave a link in the last comment). There are many Scratchers with different opinions willing to help, so you can choose which one you like.
. If you are trying to respond, sorry about the sharing project part…

Don't you just hate when people advertise in their signatures (and raisin cookies that look like chocolate chip ones. That's just not okay).

Lesson 1~ Starting Up

Whether a Finder or a Mentor, your start is key to how the rest of the conversation will go!

If you are Mentoring someone, properly introduce yourself. Be very sure to be kind! You want your New Scratcher to get a good first impression. If you are Finding someone, and you've found them, politely tell them how they seem fairly new to Scratch, and that we will help them if they'd like! If you are cold or rigid, why would they want help from you?

Here are some basic moods of New Scratchers~

Kind

Easy as pie, here. Simply greet them and 1) Play with their kindness, and 2) Be humorous.

Stubborn
First of all, introduce yourself. Say that they respond with something like, “I don't need a Mentor!” or, “Well, I don't need much help.”

The best response would be, “Oh, well, okay! If you would like one in the future, just take a look here~ (Link to Main Thread)! We can really help. ” or “Well, I'll see what I can do for you.

You have to 1) Act like you didn't realize their stubborn statement and 2) Offer your services anyway!

Rude
First of all, introduce yourself. Say that they respond with something like, “I don't need a Mentor!” or, “Okay, so when are we going to do something!?”

The best response would be, “Oh, well, okay! If you would like one in the future, just take a look here~ (Link to Main Thread)! We can really help. ” or “We will start up shortly.

You have to 1) Act like you didn't realize their rude statement and 2) Don't force anything! If you say, “Come on! join!” they might be offended, and that would seal the chances of them joining!

As you can see, New Scratchers can have a variety of emotions. After all, they are new! So, your assignment is to respond to these 3 situations below, and tell me which situation is which New Scratcher emotion- (“A”s are for Finders; “B”s for Mentors!)

1. Tell me your greeting

2A. Reply~ “i don't need a menttor! im rlly good at scratch alredy” What type, and what is your response?

2B. Reply~ “So what am I doing first? ” What type, and what is your response? Kind. Something like: Well, first I'd like to tell you the basic things (introduce the forums and wiki to them and tell them how to follow guidelines). (Conclude asking if they need any more help with basic things before we move on)

3A. Reply~ “umm… well, I guess so? it seems pretty cool. where do i start” What type, and what is your response?

3B. Reply~ “fine, but it better woork! what will we do” What type, and what is your response? Stubborn. Something like: I will teach you how to make friends, create projects, and explore the community! Let's start by accessing the forums and the Wiki ( give basic explanations of the forums and wiki). (Conclude asking if they have any questions about either.)

4A. Reply~ “it seems like you guys dont do much. if you were bettr, maybe.” What type, and what is your response?

4B. Reply~ “I'm already really good but this might make me better. I hope I'm not wasting my time”
Rude. Something like: It's great you are confident that you know how to use scratch! Did you have any questions about anything in particular? I'd be happy to help you!

I would maybe tell him/her like this:

Hi! Seems like a good idea for a game! I would suggest you to add more things about the emperor catfish, like… What does the emperor catfish does? What does the emperor catfish react if it touched something? Also think about how can you win the game? Or, to earn points? And you can add some enemies to make the game harder.

Lesson 2

Review
To start out, let's do a quick review. To answer these, just say what kind of New Scratcher Mood Type these are~

“Alright, what will I be doing? I'm pretty confused…?”

“Fine. This seems pointless though…”

“I really don't need help, but I guess…”

“No! This is stupid.”

So, what would we do? "

Mentors
Here are the Core Standards for Mentoring-

Forums- The basics of the Discussion Tab, such as Signatures, Posting, Quoting, Snipping, Browsing Threads, and Following Threads.
Coding- The basics of Creating a project, then explain the following- Pen, Variables, Operators, Motion, Control, Events, More Blocks, Sound, Sensing, and how they connect. Simply explain the meaning of these Tabs.
Scratch History- This is probably the hardest one as far as finding the information goes. Just put times that Scratch was created, any LARGE events in the past.
Studios- Curate, Follow, Manage, and Create. Explain them!
Wiki- Say where to find the Wiki and how to navigate through it. Be sure to explain the features!
How to get further help after the Mentoring Committee- Links to things like the About Tab, the “Getting Started on Scratch” search in the Wiki, and more.

Finders
Here are some basics about Hot-Spots of New-Scratchers-

Scratcher Chains- In some scenarios, Scratchers join in packs, or they know each-other in real life so thy comment with/follow each other. Use this to your advantage!
Forums- New Scratcher Forums do do you well! Use them!
Following Relationships- When one New Scratcher follows another, there is a chance that that Scratcher is New!

As you can see, Finders have a very bland/general Standard for Finding. We will work on these a lot, however! (Mentors too)

@Mentors
Create a post or project that gives the information required from my teachings; Include links and formatting!

@Finders
Find 5 New Scratchers, ask them to be Mentored, and say what strategy you used to find them!

____________________________________________________________________________________

First Exercise:

A new Scratcher has asked you to help them with a game that they have created! Its called

The Amazing Adventures of the Emperor CATFISH!

It includes 2D Graphics where a fish is wandering through the ocean looking for secret seeweed…

He say's that he has this base idea but he can't think of anything else to add to his project and plot. How do you help him?

Here are where all Extra Credit Opportunities will be~

Opportunity #1
You can always fix your lessons for Extra Credit !

Opportunity #2
Finders~ Find 3 New Scratchers, and give me a link to them! Then, tell me how you found them! Mentors~ Make a project showcasing your skills!
Mentors~ Create an imaginary interaction between yourself and a new scratcher. The chain must be at least ten comments long .

Woah, Brains, this is great, and answers what I asked!

Forums- The basics of the Discussion Tab, such as Signatures, Posting, Quoting, Snipping, Browsing Threads, and Following Threads.
Hiya! Today I wanted to teach you about the discussion tab. You can see it on the top of your screen, with explore, create, and a few other tabs. To make a signature, scroll down to the bottom of the page after clicking discuss, and find the link that says “Change my signature”. This will pull up a sort of post format. Just insert what you want and hit submit. Your signature will show up at the end of every post you make, so be careful! To post, go to a forum, such as the New Scratcher forum, and hit the “create new post” button at the top of the screen. Please be careful, though, what posts you make, and make sure they fit the purpose of that forum.
Coding- The basics of Creating a project, then explain the following- Pen, Variables, Operators, Motion, Control, Events, More Blocks, Sound, Sensing, and how they connect. Simply explain the meaning of these Tabs.
To create a project, just slam that “create” button at the top of the screen. The scratch cat will already be in the project, just start with him. To make him do something, we'll just say “Say ‘Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious’”, put a green flag in his editing area. Then just put this little purple block under it.
when green flag clicked
say [Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious]
Great! Now I'm going to teach you about different groups of blocks.
pen down
The above greenish block is a pen block. These blocks are cool because you can make them draw stuff while the project is going. You just set the pen color, make a sprite move, and then you can put a “Pen down” block and it will leave a trail following the sprite.
(Variable)
The orange block above is a variable. These are very helpful, because you can make them keep track of points, time, or just random stuff you need throughout the game.
(pick random (1) to (10))
The green block above is an operator. These are probably the hardest to explain, but also the most useful. Pretty much, operators allow you to ask the computer something, like a math problem or to pick a random number.
go to x: (180) y: (15)
The above block is a motion block. These blocks pretty much just move the sprite where you want it, when you want it.
if <> then

end
That block was a control block. This is another super helpful group, because some have space to put in operators, so you can make a computer calculate something, then use that information to time something. They can also make things go forever.
when green flag clicked
The brown blocks are event blocks. They really help because NOTHING would be able to happen without these blocks. These blocks tell the computer when to start a script, and if you don't use them your script won't work.
define
This category is called “More blocks”. It sounds awesome, cause you can create your own block, right? Well, sort of. You have to remember that computers can't really understand text, so you have to define what the block means. More blocks is pretty much just for the sake of simplicity, so you really won't have to use them too much.
play sound [song v] until done
The pink blocks, sound, are AWESOME! These blocks allow you to add music or voices to your project, and even compose your own music!
<key [space v] pressed?>
The light blue blocks, sensing, are sort of like operators. Operators will ask the computer to do something, sensing allows you to interact with the computer.

I will add more later, this isn't my final work. I will probably bump it when I am done editing, I just need to do something else. :)
