Ok… so I was on the Scratch site as a normal scratcher would do, and I came across a post which advertised products. I replied to the poster who posted the post that advertised the product, telling him not to spam. Then, I reported his post. The Scratch Team deleted his post… but that was not all. The reply that I made telling him not to spam was gone ALSO!!! Now, my question is:

Did I do anything wrong? Why did they also delete my post?

No, you didn't do anything wrong. They often delete quotes of bad posts (even if “bad” is not inappropriate per se) to completely remove them and avoid confusion for people reading the thread.

Good.
BTW, I would like to point out that I replaced the spam links in the quote with a (spam link removed) sign.

It still interrupts the thread, and usually contains the names of the advertised stuff…

Yeah, nothing wrong. However, it's probably better to simply report it. These spammers usually don't take advice like that.

Ok…. perhaps I should stop giving advice and just report things like that in the future?

Yeah. People take admin notifications more seriously than Scratchers' advice.

Ok….. probably I should limit the advices I give, and only do it when I come across a duplicate topic and provide a link to the original topic….

I'm not saying giving advice to Scratchers is such a bad idea, but replying to spam just keeps it going.

And those spammers aren't normally people–they're bots. They won't read the post.

It really does depend on the post. Some spam is just overeager Scratchers that want to share their stuff but don't know the right way to go about it.

Either way, in cases like that it's best to report and move on. We're going to delete it and anything referring to it anyway, so your reply just temporarily adds to the confusion, and gives us more to clean up! (Even better is when someone necroposts on a topic, and someone else comes along, telling them not to necropost.)
