DO NOT UPDATE YOUR FLASH PLAYER TO 11.8
Link.
This version causes a huge amount of lag when Scratch projects use the Appearance effects like Ghost and Color.
It also causes other strange things on other websites like YouTube, where the entire video position has shifted down:

If it's too late, you can get an earlier version of Flash from the Adobe Flash Player Archive.

Link.Hmm, that explains why one of my projects now has a laggy intro. Guess I have to find a way to downgrade Flash for now.

I'll forward the issue to the ST developers later today.

DO NOT UPDATE YOUR FLASH PLAYER TO 11.8
On Windows it is fairly straight forward. Just uninstall the flash player, download 11.7 from the archive at adobe (linked in the topic linked above) and reinstall using the *.win.exe from the zipfile you have downloaded. If you are using Chrome you will also need to disable the pepper plugin from the plugins menu in Chrome as that will have autoupdated to 11.8. Hmm, that explains why one of my projects now has a laggy intro. Guess I have to find a way to downgrade Flash for now.

DO NOT UPDATE YOUR FLASH PLAYER TO 11.8
Oh boy, it's doing it for 11.7 too…
I thought downgrading would make a difference. Instead it is no different.
Argh, I can't take it anymore! I can't work on any of my projects until this issue is fixed!

DO NOT UPDATE YOUR FLASH PLAYER TO 11.8
Oh boy, it's doing it for 11.7 too…Okey dokey, I got an e-mail about this. While Flash's update did cause some issues, the part about the looks effects being laggy is a different problem. Luckily, the ST thinks they figured it out (a fix is in the works, so it will take some time to implement). Just to give a description of the problem in case anyone is interested:

There's this part of the Scratch 2.0 program called a shader that controls look effects. The current shader that Scratch 2.0 uses, unfortunately, was de-optimized, which is why some look effects causes a slowdown. So the Scratch Team is going to replace the current shader with a different shader to see if it performs better.

Ok, been testing some more and I can confirm that Ghost doesn't cause lag (or the lag it does create is barely noticible).
But Color and Brightness does.
My Nyan Cat project shows this after you click the Lower Volume button enough times (which makes the background cycle through colours.

Yeah you can. Just install 11.7 on your computer and then in chrome type in “about:plugins” in your address bar. Then you should see 2 flash plugins. Disable the one that is version 11.8 and that says “pepflash” or pepperflash or something like that, and leave the other plugin that should be version 11.7 enabled.
All done.
Also, this should really be an announcement by the Scratch team so people are aware until this is fixed. I had to dig a little before I found out, unless I missed something.
