ability to edit comments

have you ever posted a comment then wanted to edit it? You can edit forum topics, why not comments?

thanks guys for all your support!

edit Saturday 9:30 :

I understand many scratchers are commenting saying that trolls are more likely to happen here are some things scratch team could do to prevent trolls:

maybe if any one of your comments are reported you can lose your ability to edit until scratch team reads your comment.

maybe only full scratchers can edit comments.

edit tuesday 12:30 :

If scratch team doesn't allow you to edit comments maybe they could let you delete them.

Semi-support. This feature is useful, but could be abused by bullies.

But, I would like to note that since people don't actually know when someone will be online to read a comment, and when they do read it, the sender is often offline, the logistics of leaving a mean comment, letting the recipient read it, then editing it before it gets reported would be too hard to be practical for a bully.

Explanation:
1. Troll comments on someone's project, “This project is dumb!”
2. Owner of project sees the comment, but does not report it, because he's new and does not know what to do. But he is now feeling bad.
3. Troll edits his comment to “This project is neat!”
4. Other peoples sees this comment as a nice comment, however, in reality, this comment was used to bully someone.
5. The Scratch Team does not know anything about this, and the troll escapes freely, successfully bullying someone without getting caught.

That make a LOT of sense! However if you post something you regret you can edit it. If someone reports a comment they should not be allowed to edit. Thanks so much or explaining, and yes, Now there is more possibility for bullying

People have bullied on forums. How come you can edit on forums?

Maybe Scratchers only can edit. I support. Maybe an edit log.

Why don't we remove editing from forum posts then?

It's a convenience here. I support editing comments if there is a log for it and a 30 minute rule.

(I semi-support by the way- neutral) Comments are direct (while posts are indirect) to the user and his studios/projects. Maybe that's why.

I could use some ST explanation though.

You can use it to edit mistakes, but trolls will use that to their advantage.

I think everyone above has already said the risks about trolls editing comments.

However, I would like to point this out from the technical perspective. If we want to make this abuse-proof (or at least abuse-resistant), we need to have a system to store edit histories. That would be complicated to implement, for relatively little benefit.

This is a very good point. To do it right, there really should be an “edit history” kept of the comments and some way for the moderators to view them. It would be a pretty big change to our systems.

@gracewebsite - you're doing a really nice job of keeping the first post up to date with arguments both for and against. Nice work

I agree with @Paddle2See and @jvvg.

Support if there is a history of edits that only the ST can see.

actually, i sometimes make spelling errors. and then that requires posting ANOTHER comment with a spelling fix. maybe add a spell checker that suggests things like "you worte kdi. did you mean kid?'

I think that the owner of the project/profile should be able to view all the edited comments, while others can only view the original.
