Looking for linux distro under 5MB

Uh… Did you mean 5 GB? 5 MB is near impossible for an OS to run! The tiniest of tiny distros (that are near unusable) are at least 10 MB!

The lightest distro that is usable is Puppy Linux Lucid.

Windows 8 needs 20 GB to run the core OS, you know.

Or is it another rule for your school?

Still, under 5MB is too small for any usable OS.

S/he said that his/her school used to run XP on ancient desktop computers. After the school requested him/her to get a USB with XP on it, s/he asked, and I recommended Linux. S/he'd said that s/he tried it already, but ended up installing Windows 8.1 on the desktops. Now they can't get pass the start screen.

There is Puppy Linux at around 150MB, then **** Small Linux at 50MB. The smallest one I could find is Tinycore Linux Core package at 9MB.

This seems interesting - but seriously, under 5MB? That's the smallest Linux as far as I know and it's 15 MB.

Perhaps an old 2003-1998 version may be that small.

uClinux is your best bet. I can't find the exact space requirements, but it will probably fit.

Edit: Yep, it will fit.

If you want use scratch I don't think that it is possible with 9 MO

flash player alone for puppy linux is around 7 Mo
browser need also the same space

I use puppy linux in school with scratch

I have made a scratch2 package 60 Mo (adobe air and scratch offline version with spirites ) for puppy linux see this post
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=75950

I use its comfortably with old xp computers 512 Mo ram (I boot with an usb key. If your computer is too old to boot on a usbkey you can also boot on a cd )
Under 512 MO screen freeze after a few minuts

if you have more 512MO you can use wine and last scratch version version with it

Rather than arguing - just show us the OS

TinyBasic ranges from 2-3 kb depending on version

That's a programming language, not an OS.

If this is true: If a computer can run XP, it can run any other OS the same size. This guy is looking for a tiny OS, but remember that it will be very minimal and probably not have network abilities.

10 MB is too little for any system.

Lubuntu was quite decent on a Pentium M, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Puppy Linux was ridiculously fast, although it doesn't look very good…
