just now I realized how misleading that mail icon at the top is… it's not for sending messages, it's just your mailbox which collects all the important updates that you receive from others, such as loving your projects, following, commenting, etc. if you want to send a message directly to someone, you go to their profile (type http://scratch.mit.edu/users/TheirUsername) and scroll down to the comment box, then type your message.
