im pretty sure thats just jupiters famous big red spot. plus i never heard this on any news or even on nat geo or the science channel.
on the comparison of earth and jupiter in size you can see that jupiter has MANY spots i am sure that is what the second picture is.

(view all replies)Everybody seems to be confused. If you look at the first picture it looks like the Earth is hitting Jupiter. I think the maker of this project was trying tobe funny, NOT trying to scare you about the end of the world.
no neither...the earth and jupiter picture was just a comparison between the two planets.

The only way the world will end is when the Sun goes out but that won't happen in millons of years!

actually, it might be before that! the sun would turn into a red giant star. It would be so big that Earther would be inside the sun. But, as you said, that won't be for millions, or billions, of years.

Hey, there is many prophecies about Earth being destroyed. There's 2012, 2014, a few more I don't remember, who cares. It was meant to go in 2000 and sixth of June 2006. Just because a comet has hit Jupiter doesn't mean we need to be scared. The gravitational pull is stronger. We've gotten lucky, but we're in a galaxy, where comets fly around and smash into unsuspecting objects. No use fretting over it. Ignore it.
Since the beginning of time, people have forecasted the end of humanity... ...doesn't seem to have happened yet, in my opinion...

(view all replies)Earth got lucky many times. What do you think all the craters in the moon are? they're craters from asteroids hitting it. if the moon hadn't been there, they would have hit Earth.
That's not how it works... The moon has no atmosphere, so it can't protect itself from asteroids, unlike Earth.
On 2014 the sciencetists say that amatear is gonna crash earth. And all creatures are going to die. the earth is going to die. Also in 2053 maybe the atmosphere is going to get destroyied. And we are going to have serouis globel warming. Serousily guys reduce, re-use and recycle. And walk with out using cars. Save fossil fuels. Save energy, you save earth.

Uh, hate to break it to you, but this is a GALAXY. comets move and hit stuff in galaxies. a big comet hit a gas giant that doesn't hold any life at all. big whoop.
Or does it have no life? Probably. But what if it does have life? They'd all be dead and you wouldn't know.

Thousands? Yeah right. it is big but not quite thousands. The great storm is about a 70th of the planet's surface and the entire storm is 3 times the size of earth, so the surface it touches can't be that big.

oh come on large objects are much much much more likely to crash into Jupiter than Earth because 1: it is much bigger and 2: it has much more gravitational pull.
Yes, I don't see why everyone's fretting. It's not like we could stop a comet anyway. leave that to the army/missile defence/the atmosphere/luck.

This is exactly like the paranoia about the sun exploding and consuming everything. This hasn't happened in what..? Around 2 billion years? Because -obviously- we would not be here if this happened. And it's very much doubted that anytime when we will be alive this will happen. Besides if an asteroid/comet/ flying rock of ice comes in our general direction, chances are it's going to hit some other 20x bigger than us planet. .___.

Yeah. Jupiter is great but I don't think It's sole purpose is to be hit by asteroids instead of us.

That's Jupiter doing it's job. Without it we would be hit every 10,000 years by something big. Plus, most of the objects orbiting Jupiter were captured by it. If Earth would be hit it would move only a few miles(or kilometers) when it is millions(at least) from the sun. If you're worried about Earth hitting Jupiter, Earth is closer to the sun than Jupiter... No reason to be scared. (and for Earth sized chunks, Jupiter has tons of them around it)
JUPITER HAS NO JOB! WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE ALL EXPECTING IT'S JUST THERE TO SAVE EARTH? IT'S HARDLY IT'S FAULT IT'S SO BIG AND HAS SO STRONG GRAVITY! Bet you wouldn't like to live on Jupiter. At least it can't get any larger. A Gas giant that is larger than Jupiter would fall apart in disorder.

(view all replies)It's very nice of you, but don't take it as too much a warning. Jupiter has the largest gravity, so it and Saturn(also large) usually clean all the stray asteroids. No need to really worry.
Ever heard of the astroid Apohis? It might hit earth in 2036. Its the size of the Rose Bowl stadium. There was a video about it on Nova Sience Now. You can find it on PBS.com, or is it PBS.org? just belive it...
There's a 1 in 45,000 chance that it will hit.

well it's just a calendar? they probably never said anythign about the world ending in 2012, their calendar just ends. plus, i heard the calendar starts all over again in another cycle. if everything the mayans said was ture, then why didn't they predict their own death? plus if the world would end in 2012 we would make that space station in sci-fi movies.

Well, (sorry for criticizing your space station idea, but I feel in a critical mood. don't take it personally) if we were all to go in space stations, Alot of them would be destroyed by the object about to hit earth or the subsequent blast from it. Plus, eventually we would run out of room and food on the stations. In addition to that, the station would just be sitting there in space, open to any kind of meteor hit.

3 times the size of earth. It's my favorite feature too. It doesn't go on for ever, although it has been nonstop for millions of years.
