I actually love the concept. Here is a tip: Based on the difference between the paddle x position and ball x position you can work out where the ball hit the paddle.
Rather that just a bounce you can apply a different bounce direction depending on where the ball hits the paddle.
The other idea is to preplace the paddle with a sad looking snake. Every thim he's hit by the ball his eyes flick up, you hear "ouch" and the body twitches.
Of course the ball could be a over fed bird with a big belly.
