Good work. For the single column sprites you would have to double the number of combinations if you wanted to keep the invaders animated.
I myself am working on a similar theme but with huge twist. I'll let you know when it's near testing!

A very faithful reproduction. Control is a bit sluggish, you might find that replacing both your "if key pressed blocks" with a repeating block that uses "if __ key pressed" improves the performance.
Just realised that there only about 30 odd combinations of costume required for a stack of 5 alien's, so this looks like a possible solution. I'll start work on v0.2
Thanks. I wish I could get more invaders on the screen to be honest. I'm looking at the possibility of using a single sprite for a whole column, but the number of combinations that would have to be reflected in different costumes would be large (120ish) and the decision to determine which to show would probably slow it down more than the 1xalien=1xsprite does.
Any ideas gratefully received.
Download the 47 sprites and 141 scripts of "Space Invaders" and open it in Scratch
Project Notes
I've not included the full set of invaders because of performance issues on my machine. With 20, it runs ok at the moment, but it can run quicker when run from a website, so it might be ok here.
There are a couple of little bugs in there that need ironing out and I've been rough and ready with the multiple levels. This needs a bit more work really.
For some reason, the behaviour of the bug's 'gloop' differs on the website, sometimes it goes straight through the buildings, which it doesn't do at home. But then I've noticed scratch do some very weird things sometimes, not clearing down variables, not resetting costumes etc etc.
I'll include some project notes if anyone's interested.
