A crazy amount of code for what should have been just 3 rules. One of the world's most obfuscated and slowest running implementations of the game of life.

It is not pointless. Look up Conway's Game of Life or, for a more generic (and more complicated) explanation, cellular automata, on Wikipedia.

this is brilliant. i made a version of this ages ago but didnt upload it. its not as good but you could selcted which parts were shaded at the start yourself.
