this is brilliant. i made a version of this ages ago but didnt upload it. its not as good but you could selcted which parts were shaded at the start yourself.

actually, there are only 2 rules, and it gets very complex, he has done a good job.
It is not pointless. Look up Conway's Game of Life or, for a more generic (and more complicated) explanation, cellular automata, on Wikipedia.
