Nice! the idea of using a mask (a sprite with a 'hole' in it) and covering the excess space with other masks isn't exactly new, but this one's especially well done with only minimal code. I love it! Btw, you could probably make a gradient beam by adding another layer-sprite behind the 'hole' and applying a combination of color- and ghost effects (maybe just using the ghost effect would already to the job).

This is cool! I like the gradual turning on and off that the other one had, but it is awesome that this allows color.
