It didn't take too long, don't forget that notes on the guitar get repeated a lot. :) I ended up having to record 42 notes (I also recorded the six open strings separately because open strings have a slightly different sounds than the same notes in other positions)
This is a wonderful idea. I love how anybody can learn about notes, sounds and music without having to actually have a teacher or a real guitar. Very cool. What made you come up with this idea? What was your inspiration?
Thanks! I was playing my guitar, and thinking about how bad the scratch midi sound system sounds when it comes to guitar :P so I sat down for 20 minutes and recorded every possible note on my guitar (up to the 12th fret). I suppose my inspiration was this: http://www.chordbook.com/guitarchords.php It's a flash app that does the same thing as mine, but does quite a bit more. But I recommend getting a guitar for anyone who wants to learn guitar, virtual guitar is good but a real guitar is better.
I like the picking style myself...but sometimes I like to mix it up with a strum. It might be fun to have the up arrow do a reverse picking style (from sixth string to first) just to add more variations. This is so cool :)
Sweet! I love the chord buttons! One thing I noticed...when I set a chord and then move a note using the mouse, if I use the down-arrow to strum, it seems to move the note back to the original position in the chord. Glitch?
Paddle2see, I've been having a problem. I've added more features and fixed many glitches, but it won't upload. Every time I try, it sends the data, waits for a long time, then says "failed unknown reason". This has been happening ever since I first tried to upload the project. Every once in a while, it successfully uploads, but usually I'm unable to update this project. Do you know why this happens?
For some reason you seem to have switched the traditional fretboard diagram over - the nut is almost always shown on the right hand side of the screen except where chord diagrams are specifically for left-handed players. Anyone who uses this and then buys a book of chord diagrams is going to be VERY confused.
Oops - I meant the nut is traditionally on the LEFT of the image. That way it shows the fretboard in a way that is familiar when you look down upon it when playing.
I play the clarinet and the bass clarinet. although i do not know how to play the guitar it sort of helps me with the pitches! Good Job!!!!!! more please
Sounds cool, but I personally like to make projects that are tools, 'cuz there's a lot of game projects on Scratch anyway...or maybe some sort of AI...
I'm not accepting or anything, but what would the projects be like? Games? Or something else? It would be cool if we had some sort of thing we had to accomplish, then we both made projects about it.
I'm sorry, but if you spam any more, I'm going to have to start deleting your comments. Use the forums if you want to advertise, and advertise on projects only if the thing you're advertising is very relevant to the project. Download the 26 sprites and 90 scripts of "Virtual Guitar" and open it in Scratch
Project Notes
This is my attempt at a virtual guitar. Drag the black dots to place the "Fingers" on different frets. While dragging, press X to mute the string, and O to leave the string unmuted, but open. Press space to strum. All notes were recorded on my guitar. One note at a time
Now, you can select any major OR minor chord, and it will set it for you. Then, flip through variations of the chord with the LEFT and RIGHT ARROWS
**NEW**You now have the option of saving a custom chord. 5/15/11
NOTE: All the chord positions came right out of my head, so if I forgot something, tell me about it.
Please give feedback! If you find a glitch, or have a suggestion, please tell me about it.

Wow, great work! One of my preservice education students found your project and shared it with our class. Very inspiring to see creative, musical possibilities like this in Scratch! http://t4tspring2011.edublogs.org/2011/02/22/scratch-virtual-guitar/

I think this is pretty cool man!
Thanks, Goatee4!
Nice project, a good addition for other versions would be buttons for 7th, major 7th, diminished, etc. chords. Even if it's just one variation :P
You fave to look at this! (link to project)

I noticed that too, I assume the project's creator is left handed.
