1)Yes, but then, Portugal didn’t exist yet, as a country. The Iberian peninsula was almost fully occupied by the Arabians in a few years because there was war between several little Christian kingdoms that were spread all over the Iberia. It was the 8th century. Then, with a great help of French knights and crusades, the Christians began to get back their land from the Moors. As a result of this war, some kingdoms were born.
2)Portugal was one of them and the fight has continued, pushing the Moors towards the South, winning and loosing battles, till the end of 13th century, in Portugal. Granada was the last Moore kingdom, in the territory that is Spain today. It was about the end of 15th century. Seven centuries of war but a lot of Arabian culture to share. This is history. There were no good and bad guys, but only men living their lives.
Yes, Spanish and Portuguese are very much similar, because we are brothers and neighbours. In the 11th century there were several kingdoms in the Iberia, (SouthWest of Europe). All of them have joined together, forming Spain, except Portugal, for no particular reasons. It’s only history. Portuguese language is also similar to French and Italien, because their Roman roots.
I’m afraid you aren’t completely right. At the end of 15th century Portugueses and Spaniards has divided the world into two halves: Western to Spain, Eastern to Portugal. So, if Spanish is spoken in great part of America, Portuguese is spoken in SouthEast of America, (Brazil), in Africa, (Guinee, Cabo Verde, Angola, S.Tomé and Prince, Mozambique) and Asia, (Timor, Macau), countries where the Portuguese is the official language. They are more than 240.000.000 people.
This was only for fun, but I think the Scratch is a good place to share our idiom. However, it should be accomplished by a language teacher in order to not deceive the kids. I’ll be back to this subject, perhaps...
