You can always find out how somebody made a project by downloading it and looking at their code. This one was fun to make- Mostly, the little red dots move around randomly, and if they touch something black, they stamp themselves with a black border, and then reset themselves.
jhnbytwoo: good question! it's not- the color depends on the number of particles that have attached so far (there is a global variable keeping track). You can download the code and look, of course.
rawkrboi made a mod of my original version of this project ((link to project)) and also asked if colors could be added- so I tried it out!

This is a simulation of the branching growth of a crystal (also known as diffusion-limited aggregation). There is a "seed" at the center, and the red particles move randomly until they stick to it.
Use the slider to adjust the randomness of the movement. More randomness should result in more branching.
