Download the 5 sprites and 15 scripts of "Kayak in Moving Wate…" and open it in Scratch Project Notes
A simulation of a kayak in an area of strong current differences.
Controls:
=======
Left Arrow - Paddle on the left side
Right Arrow - Paddle on the right side
Space bar - Reverse the paddle stroke
You start off in an area of still water (darker blue). Practice your kayak strokes here until you understand how to control the boat. To paddle FORWARDS on the left side, hold down the left arrow key. To paddle BACKWARDS on the left side, hold down the space key AND the left arrow key. The right side works the same way but uses the right arrow key (of course).
When you feel confident, try crossing the eddyline into the strong current area (light blue) and see if you can cross over without hitting any of the dirt areas (grey).
If you find yourself stuck in the dirt, try paddling hard, you may be able to drag the boat off. Or, if all else fails, click on the old Green Flag and reset.

are you still making projects? because if you are willing to, I've got a project I can't finish. It's based on a kayak and 'i figured maybe you could finish it. It's pretty easy and simple. anyway, tell me if you want me to post it so you can see it or something. :)

Paddle! I had the craziest dream! I and plenty of Scratchers were at your birthday party! It was crazy: Maki-Tak was playing cards with archmage, there were some wolves at the birthday party, and there was tons of food! I just had to tell you.

Thought I'd check out some more of your projects and i'm very impressed. I can imagine the code for this is complex (that's why i'm downloading it and having a look lol). But it's enjoyable to play and i even feel like i know a bit about kayaking now!!!
Thanks! Yes - I spent a long time playing with the concept of a 2-sensor boat that would respond fairly accurately to speed changes in water. There's certainly room for improvement but I think I captured the basic behavior I was looking for.

MAn, this is the BEST GAME I SEEN ONE SCRATCH . Except, you should work on graphics. But REALLY great aswome great nice cool the best game on scratch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO GREAT!!!!!

I went on a school trip a couple days ago and we actually went canoeing and then on a motor boat out on the Chesapeake Bay :)
Cool! Did you have a good time? I did a little paddling in that area a couple of years back...saw some birds I'd never seen before. It was pretty nice.

(view all replies)The only time i can remember kayaking is i think around 1 year. I did it w/ my family and it was cool! We kept going into rocks and we kept crashing! I was even launched out of the kayak and i needed to swim back! Pretty crazy.

Yes, I do! I paddle about 800 miles a year. Mostly on the Penobscot river, but sometimes on lakes or in the ocean. I love it!

it turns out that am sick, but i don't have Swine Flu. In about 2 hours I am going to a doctors appointment. I am running fever of 101.4 and i feel HORRIBLE. That's why i am not at school right now.

Ooh, nice. Suits your name, anyways. I like it! The only problem I had was that when my kayak hit a rock, it never left!
They are more like sandbars...you can usually paddle your way off of them, eventually :)
interesting. it can get a litte glitchy whe nyou hit the rocks but its a good idea and the program is fairly stable :).
Yeah, the rocks cause issues...the boat is really just two sensors. The sensors have to be separated to get the behavior I want when crossing the eddyline. But that leaves a gap in the middle of the boat where it doesn't sense a rock. Maybe I can come up with a better approach.

heh heh o can cope with the still water but as soon is i get on the rapids, i die :P
Try pointing the nose of the boat almost straight upstream and then entering the fast water with just a bit of speed...that works pretty well!

(view all replies)I would think you would certainly want to give credit...if you know who owns it. As far as payment...that really depends on what their copyright requires and/or whether you consider what you are doing to be "fair use" of the material. (view all replies)I really don't know how to advise you on that. It's an area I don't know that much about. I know that the Scratch Team recommends that you only post material that is allowed by it's copyright. If you don't know who holds the copyright, maybe you should remove it.

The sounds were from various Scratch users, which let me use the sounds that were in their projects. The thing is, someone came recently and said that the sounds were copyright and aginst the law to put up without giving credit to lucasfilms. I did not get these sounds myself, so I gave credit to those users. Should I take the project offline, or...

Well, against all odds I made it not badly. I hit a rock but I still could pass the stream.
You sound like you are nearly ready for the Olympics!
I made it across but then hit the rocks on the edge from momentum.
Sometimes you can avoid that with some quick back paddling :)
