Did I? I know very little about fonts...I just picked one that looked "right". I do like the Copperplate Gothic though, so round and solid!

Very original, indeed. I agree with the comparisons already made here and I would like to add another one: do you remember the calculators with a sided handle which we turn back and forward to subtract and add, with type writer keys to shift the numbers? Well, with knobs it would be much more friendly to operate.

You managed to make the number big enough that it had to go to exponential notation? Man, you must have been cranking for a while!

Calculators are fun...it's a good exercise to try to come up with one that works the way you want it to!

What a neat user-interface. I've got an old mechanical kitchen scale that works like this.

Thant's interesting...what are you controlling with the knob on the kitchen scale? Matching the weight with a balance of some sort?

I used to have one of those! Maybe where I got the idea. I was hoping to really give it an antique look with knurled brass knobs or maybe bakelite. But I couldn't find any good free images.

this is so cool i think its very fun and helpful (I am not doing my math homework infront of the computer) I think that you could of made it that when you use the arrow keys to change the number for one of them would be up and down the other would be right and left!

(view all replies)
Comment Reply

Paddle2See Paddle2See 2 months, 1 week ago

That's another interesting idea! It's kind of slow getting to bigger numbers using arrow keys though. Or if you make it faster, then it's hard to hit the number exactly. So I thought a set of knobs, with crude and fine control might work better. Try them for a little while and see what you think!

The most creative calculator on Scratch since Addzero's combobox one. Reminds me of a microscope focus knob, although Apple will probably come after you for copying the click wheel!

Thanks! Tell Apple that I've never even seen their click wheel (I've got a Zune). I modeled this after a tuner on an antique radio (tubes!) I had many years ago. I do agree with Apple that virtual knobs have a lot of potential as an input device!

Thanks! A virtual combination lock would be kind of interesting...keeping track of the turns left and right and all that.

That's a really interesting idea! Those things were hard to use as I recall...you have to go past the first number in a clockwise direction, then backwards to the second number, then directly to the third. Or something like that. I'll have to give that one some thought.
