Goshness! This is completely and utterly wonderful!!! I'm currently in the process of making a game where you can be a dragon and fly around in space completing various quests! ^_^
Thanks! Yeah, Asteroids is a great game. This version used to run really smoothly but since 1.3 it's been very laggy on my machine. Sorry about that, maybe I'll figure it out some day.
*reads sidebar* aaaaaah! a stroke of genius with the "sprite request" system. and from fullmoon for the thing to force all the samples to load immediately.
Blimey charlie that's something special right there. How did you get it running so smooth with all those sprites at once? It's got the right balance and addiction factor of the original too. Challenge you to do Space Invaders though, I have a feeling it'd give Scratch headaches :D
I've seen some pretty decent Space Invader clones done on Scratch...I don't think I bookmarked them 'cause I was never that big a fan of SI. I like the freedom of open space and trying to wriggle my ship out of a tight cluster of rocks...that's the life!
Wow! This is just like the real thing! Is it ok if I make my own game using some of the scripts in this project? I have come up with some ideas for my own version. The main thing I need to know is how to make your ship to keep moving in the same direction when you thrust. I hope to see more projects from you soon. Someday when I have time, I'm going to start from project one to the newest one you have made. This is going to take some time!
Absolutely, take anything you want from it. I'm looking forward to what you come up with! I'm sure I'll put out some more projects once winter closes in - I'll have more free time.
cool. i have an idea you might like.you have to giude a ball round a course without going out of the path (like scratchgorules marble game).i saw a game like that on the web but don't rember what its called!it would be hard to make!
I used to play a game like that, I think on the Macintosh, way back about 20 years ago. It was a lot of fun. Thanks for the idea...I don't know if I'm going to take you up on it or not as I'm doing other things at the moment but I appreciate the idea.
Every time I move the ship, I check with a bunch of IF blocks to see if the X or Y coordinate of the ship is close to one of the edges. If it is, I change it to the other side of the screen.
My version works kind of like the original...but I bet a lot of people will find it too hard. Yours, with the ship that slows down fast, is better for younger kids. They each have strong points!
That's a great implementation you've got there. Very smooth gameplay and I definitely like the rock recycling system. One bug: you can shoot while your ship is in pieces before it regenerates.
this project is good but it is easier to make games like this with gamemaker7. just google it. the pro edittion(well worth it) cost 20 USD. but there is plenty youcan do witth the free lite eddition. an example: http://nxtgeek.webs.com/
It's a cool game. I like it how the score isn't the ugly variable people usually use. Does it really need to 'load midi sounds' though? :) . You should try my newest game, and make your own levels if you want by following the rules on the project notes: (link to project)
You're right...the MIDI loader is left over for when I was using some MIDI instruments for sounds...I left it in just in case I went back to them :). Sharp of you to notice! The score display I got from The_Guardian.
At first I had 5 shots but I found it a little too easy...and it was slowing things down, doing the checks for the extra bullets. So I settled on 3 shots. It wouldn't be hard to put the other 2 back, if you want to make a remix!
you've never made an extremely "good" game, your games have been fun and simple, maybe you should try to make a really good game! you should, I enjoy trying your project!
Yeah...well don't hold your breath waiting! I followed the link to your project, waited over a minute for the load bar to complete then another couple of minutes and my browser still wouldn't load it. Must be my internet connection is too slow. I'm going to continue to program for small project sizes. I'll leave the big stuff to you folks with the hardware to handle it!
Not sure what you would consider an extremely "good" game. Can you give examples? You mean with a lot of levels and such? Or very detailed art? I prefer to keep the projects small (for the most part) so they load fast and play well. And I'm not a very good artist.
Actually, just click my name to see it. I keep finding small ways to improve it, and since the Scratch website only seems to update projects once a day, I keep taking it down and re-posting.
Paddle2See, sorry if I am bugging you, but here is a classic game my dad used to play with me that I think you might be interested in: (link to project) it is two player, so find someone to try it with. I hope you enjoy it!
Right now, it's 5:30 in the morning. My cat woke me up again. I'm on Eastern Standard Time (East coast of the US). I bet you're well into evening where you are, yes?
It's based on Asteroids...a game that first came out in the 80's as a arcade game. It's been ported to all kinds of systems since then. Maybe your dad would like my version!
Paddle2see, you know how you said that people playing "Memory" would do better if they had an incentive? Well.....that is right. I told my friend that if he beat my hi score, I would give him a bag of candy. I lost my bag, but learned that candy is a powerful motivator! He got 29........lol!
Download the 21 sprites and 88 scripts of "Scratchoids" and open it in Scratch
Project Notes
Shoot the asteroids before they crush your ship!
Controls:
Left/Right Arrows - Turn ship
Up Arrow - Thrust
Down Arrow - Shoot
Space - Warp
When your ship first appears on the screen (and every time you get a new ship), it is surrounded by a shield (blue circle). The shield lasts 3 seconds and during that time you can not be hurt by rocks, nor can you shoot. Use the 3 seconds to move the ship to a safe area of the screen.
Artistic Comments:
I spent a LOT of quarters on the original Asteroids arcade game back in the Jurassic Period ('80s) I wanted to preserve the feel of the arcade version so I kept the graphics pretty minimal. I did take some liberties with the colors, however.
Technical Comments:
I had the most trouble coming up with a scheme to deal with the rocks splitting into smaller rocks without getting too complicated. I finally developed a 'Rock Recylcling System' that allows any rock to play any of the rock roles (Big/Medium/Small). The Stage requests a given rock size at a desired location (using global variables). Any rock that is not currently busy can respond to the request and assume the proper role. This keeps the sprite count low which helps performance. If you want more rocks (and your computer can handle it), just make more rock copies.
Acknowlegements:
Thanks to The_Guardian for the neat score display widget. Thanks to Fullmoon for the nifty MIDI frontloader widget. Thanks to Cyclone103 for suggesting the Warp feature, it adds a lot! Thanks also to all the other people who previously took a whack at Asteroids, I got inspiration and some sound effects from you!

Thanks! I'm glad you are enjoying it :)
this is a really cool game and I love how you mad it
I remember back when this was your latest project. I downloaded it, took a look at the scripts, and panicked.
That was a long time ago...the earth was young. Dinosaurs ruled the lands. Hopefully, they make more sense now :)
(view all replies)This Is Hard!!
Wow, very nice, I made an asteroids re-creation myself but it doesn't have warp.
Goshness! This is completely and utterly wonderful!!! I'm currently in the process of making a game where you can be a dragon and fly around in space completing various quests! ^_^
That sounds like fun! Please let me know when you post it on the site :)
(view all replies)Cool! Brilliant, astroids is one of my fave games
Very nice! I haven't seen the real thing yet, but this game is so awesome!

For the most accurate reproduction, you might want to see this version (link to project)

Yay! I got 1230! I love this game!

WOW! An excellent version and very faithful to the original. You have done it justice!
I only got 90, but Paddle2see rocks!
Man this rocks! Wowzer :)
Definitely, one of the best scratch games I've seen, no surprise it's made by you.

(view all replies)Excuse me, Paddle2See (comment poetry!), but would you mind if I added this to my HTML website?
How do you get the HTML code to embed one of these games?
(view all replies)Not at all. Go for it! Check out SonicPopsDad verision of Asteroids too...it is very good. You can find it in my Asteroids gallery (link to gallery)
(view all replies)AMAZING! ON MY FAVES!
Very good!
How did you make it so that when your ship touches the edge it comes out the other edge.
Every time I move the ship, I check with a bunch of IF blocks to see if the X or Y coordinate of the ship is close to one of the edges. If it is, I change it to the other side of the screen.
(view all replies)I like it that you keep it simple. It's perfect for this game. My next projects will be definitly smaller and simpler than my SpaceWar Projects.
I love your SpaceWar projects! But Scratch definately does have limitations...simpler works better!
(view all replies)thats cool and good looking
Great, but with a glitch!(I will keep it secret).
i love it!
My version works kind of like the original...but I bet a lot of people will find it too hard. Yours, with the ship that slows down fast, is better for younger kids. They each have strong points!
