Glad you're enjoying it! It's been awhile since I looked at this old project...maybe I can make it better with lists and all. Sailing is fun...but I prefer paddling since I can go against the wind :)
no, it's just, the the boat's animations look a little jerky, like the boat moves (not just scrollx and scrolly). does this really happen at all, ever, that the boat's x and/or y positions change? or is it just my imagination?
Hmmm. You don't like the way it works? There is trig used to figure out where the boat is going to be next but the background islands and stuff base everything off of the boat and don't use trig.
Thanks! You really have to watch the direction of the wind, just like a real sailboat. If you travel with the wind or sideways to the wind, you can go pretty fast.
No, you can't sail into the wind. And when you are crossing through the wind, you need to have enough speed to built up to carry you through. That's the way a real sailboat works, sorry. You can look for the island that will sell you some oars; that can make life easier!
At last, I could see and destroy the enemy with a great risk of my own life because I allmost crash against him in order to shot him for sure, because the projectile is very lazy.
I like that - lazy! That describes it very well. It is also true that if you had crashed into him, he would have sunk like a stone. I made the fighting part of this game extremly easy!
This is a really beautiful game! I'm very impressed by the scrolling engine so I'll be checking out Captial next. The sailing part itself is really well done and the whole game has a great feel to it.
bla-You are right! Many of the islands in this game have been mined for granite (Russ, Green, Crotch, others...) but Crotch island is the only one that still has an active mining operation.
hey These are islands from Maine. I know this because Crotch island was once a island where they mined granite. I went to the musuem, on an island near there where they have this huge elaborate model , that moves and has sound effects. The place is about 2 and a half hours from Mount Desert Island in maine.
dreamer - Some islands you can visit multiple times and get benefits, others are a one-time deal. Once you find the enemy once, they will reappear on a regular basis at various spots on the map.
kamesh - Yeah, it does best online with a fast machine. Be sure you have the wind behind you or coming from the side too...that has a big impact on speed.
AddZero - Yeah, it's usually a blast! Lots of beautiful islands, many with public access and camping. If you're feeling energetic, you can get all the way out to Isle Au Haut (High Island) - the big island to the south - without too much effort. For us, it's about 1.5 hours driving to the put in so we don't get down there as often as we would like.
Whoa, nice work! I didn't realize I had a cannon for a while. I found a blue boat and I shot it. It was bad right? I mean, all those people- no chance for a trial. I guess it's ok, if they where on my land... Yeah, it's all my land, posted no trespassing. :) It's been a while, this came long way! very fun and cool.
Amazing game. Has a richness and playability you don't see a lot in scratch games. Also, great use of the scrolling aspect of Capital. As an aside, many of my ancestors lived just NW of this area during the shipbuilding years of Belfast and Northport. Never been there, but it looks like a great place to kayak...
Download the 32 sprites and 108 scripts of "Privateer" and open it in Scratch
Project Notes
You are a captain of a small armed sail boat in a perilous time. You must cruise the islands keeping a watch for enemy boats while making sure your boat doesn't run short of provisions or fall into disrepair.
Explore the islands by landing on the sandy beaches (yellow areas) and find information and necessary supplies and services. Use the Map to chart a course to distant destinations.
Instructions, Instruments and Controls in game (buttons at top of screen)
Before tackling this game, make sure you have mastered the sailiing tactics in my previous game, Sailing Course Challenge.
If you're curious, the islands are based on real ones in the Deer Isle Archipelago by Stonington, Maine. We kayak there a lot.
The scrolling system was mostly borrowed from the project Capital by jmgibson. Thanks!
Issues:
1. Enemy vessel doesn't fight back yet (you caught them napping!)
2. Screens are not consistent (some use mouse clicks to exit, others use key presses)
3. Needs more missions and things to do

cool great game only thing its slow to sail but thats realistic so well done
cool
You should add a game over screen when you can't sail anymore.
Do you know how to make it when your character hits a wall for example, and make him not able to go through it until he is turned away from the wall?
Maybe these will help... (link to project)">(link to project) and (link to project)">(link to project)
I downloaded it, and it's so hectic that I cant find scrollx with 360 maneuvering.
Sorry...it's pretty complex. There are simpler scrollers around.
this is pretty good for a project this old.
Quality knows no age :)
(view all replies)This is awesome Paddle ^^, I want to go sailing someday but the closest I have done is going Deep Sea Fishing lol

(view all replies)hi lanie
(view all replies)do you use trig functions for the scrolling? if you did that, then it would work nicer.

My favourite of every scratch-games I've played. Masterpiece : )
Well, thank you very much!
(view all replies)how dou you repair your boat and get prov
Provisions...land on the beach (yellow area) at Green Island. Repairs....land on the beach at Sheep Island.
This game is great! It was a little hard to move around, you should make it faster.
Thanks! You really have to watch the direction of the wind, just like a real sailboat. If you travel with the wind or sideways to the wind, you can go pretty fast.
You should make it so the boat goes faster but great game.
cool game
wow this game is awesome! i dont know what to say. great scratching!
srry, but it's kinda boring...
you cant turn all the way but is awesome!!
