i tried keeping the ball in the air for a lot longer then i thought i would... and when i got tired i just kicked it around in the sand for awhile... guess i'm not ready to accept 'the end' just yet.
really like the smoke FX in the background -it adds so much to the atmosphere.. so cold and desolate, but please give the poor boy a shirt for pete's sake!
You could even add some emotion by having his shoulders sag and make him sigh whenever the ball hits the sand and switch to a dejected walk while he goes to get it back up in the air.
An animated ball would also be a nice touch since you could make the shadow consistent.
I can also think of some ways to use the background to emphasize how long the player has been playing such as a shift from day to night or, if you wanted to go all out, through the seasons.
Nice! I really love the sense of loneliness and futility you've brought to pong. Because of what you're trying to do I really can't think of any gameplay additions I'd make, anything extra would detract from the theme. I can think of some cosmetic changes that would add some extra polish to the presentation. Separate player animations for moving left and right and a unique hit animation would be nice.
As the last suriving child in a world that's reached its coclusion, what else can you do but play on a beach, and watch your final day on earth roll by?
Use the left and right arrow keys to move. Keep the ball aloft as long as you dare. There is no game over—only the point at which you accept your fate, and quit this innocent distraction.

I like it a lot.
I love how you've used the no-win state as an asset. I find the animations a little frantic for the tone, though... maybe slow them down a lil?
