I'm deep into exploring randomized music right now. I've just uploaded two projects (The Watcher -and- Cheer for Duck) that try to use some random music to supply the theme music in the background. That's the origin of the idea (in my Halloween projects) and may be one of the goals of it too: to add to the kind of music we can put behind our projects. Paddle2See is busy with it too, so you should check out his latest projects.
There's a separate version of this now, "Music Box." (link to project) I added little 4-note runs that bridge each chord change. I'm pleased with the effect. It means we can combine some note-for-note writing with randomized sections. Which might further 'humanize' things. I'll change the look of Music Box as soon as I get a chance so it will stand on its own.
Another great Paddle2See idea! One thing is guaranteed: there would be some astounding projects submitted. There's an amazingly wide spectrum of talents and interests among the Scratchers so we could launch the contest and then hold onto our hats!! :-) Maybe a couple of simple demo projects (each built very differently) could focus the goal. A really good idea, and Scratchers seem to love contests.
Really, this is very impressive! A very full sound with all the instrument changes and the bass line. Quite pleasant to listen to :) I'm most impressed with these experiments in computer-generated music. I'm not sure where to go from here though...
Exactly my thought about being unsure where to go. I probably told you that it started when I wanted scary 'music' for my Halloween projects. The Scratch loops are great but I wanted something different. So it initially had a utilitarian purpose....and might again. Building a 'music toolkit' that could be imported economically into projects and quickly configured to produce an 'atmosphere'. That's one way it might head...
Download this project!
Download the 3 sprites and 15 scripts of "Chordal w-Bass" and open it in Scratch
Project Notes
Lots of familiar songs can be played with only three chords -- so that's what this does. Of course it plays a random song, but it might be an old favorite of the characters at the bottom of the screen! **The tempo of the song can be changed with the slider....and that's not all that changes! So try changing the speed to see what happens!!! :-) Hope you enjoy this. Larry828 ********This separate project (Chordal #2) adds bass notes for each chord and a mid-range harmonic 'drone' held throughout the chord.

(view all replies)Maybe we should hold an automatic music contest :)
