The music is a little confused too since the project is given a list of notes it could play and it chooses each note randomly. So it keeps being different. But that might be good, depending on what kind of music people like. Thanks for trying the project!
Thanks for the reference and the link to ericr's project. It's really beautiful. Mesmerizing and even haunting. Other 'variationists' have their work cut out for them! But we can do it. I hope... :-)
I can hardly wait till you try the next in my group of The Random Music Generator series: (link to project) It's called "C-Triumph" and a single press of the Spacebar will reveal its nature. I hope you're still thinking about how to construct variations on a theme. My RMG series is a set of variations of an idea, but not of a melody... :-)
Thanks. I figured the intro might also give you a bit of a theme you could start running your variations on... :-) Running variations would be terrific but I haven't gotten the least idea yet about how to do it. But it might involve lists...
Following your lead there is now a "Speed" slider that sets the overall tempo of the music. And I slipped in a 5-note intro to give it a start that doesn't sound purely random. I hope that final tweaking marks the project as done...
Opus 23 heard about all your suggestions and demanded that it be improved as Opus 25 already had been. So I did. I removed the "Stop All" block and now the notes continue to fall after the music stops. Thanks again.
Thanks for the tip! Much appreciated. (One reason the pitchpipe came about was what seemed to be difficulty loading online. I had filled the empty note-items with blanks and it turned out that the Java engine didn't seem to like that. When I replaced them with hyphens the project loaded fine and all 3 of the Lists were displayed, where before only one would. I'd already tried taking some load off the Green Flag by adding the Spacebar...hence the pitchpipe! Live and learn...)
Wonderful! That's really incredible...intriguing to listen to. It sounds very human-created at times - but then it takes a strange jump that keeps your mind twisting to make sense of it. Leave a link for Jens - I'm sure he will be interested!
Thanks!! It does have a surprising amount of variety and surprises for such a simple set of scripts. I just added another Opus that has two more notes in the A-minor scale. Scratch is really amazing. (And I *will* leave a link for Jens. I've enjoyed a number of his projects.) Thanks so much for listening! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for the nice comment. I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
Download this project!
Download the 4 sprites and 11 scripts of "A-Music 23" and open it in Scratch
Project Notes
Press the Spacebar to start the music. The "Speed" slider sets the overall tempo of the music. ** This project randomizes the melody, the bass-line and the instruments. But using Lists allows the randomization to be controlled. And also allows for 'rests' to add spontaneity. The Bass plays two notes, but the melody is built of 5, adding more spontaneity. Suggestions by Paddle2See have improved the scripting and the project. Hope you enjoy it! --Larry828

Awesome! The slider for the tempo is very handy...you can change the music to suit your mood. The intro sounds good too.

(view all replies)You can use a very low note to initialize the sound bank, if you want it to be more discrete. Some of the low notes you can't even hear :)
