There are two strips, each one is part of a different picture. When you move it , you see only the ones not covered by the black grid. That is why the pictures looks weird when you drag it until it is not touching the picture.
Jens I really like this program, I intent to do something like that inspired in an old box of colors pencils I had when I was a boy but I did not remember how the effect worked, now I see your program I realize how its works, thanks ;)

Really interesting. Would that children's book be a Scanimation Picture Book, perchance? Love that book series. Proto-filmic technique, of course. Takes you back to when the movies really were strange & wonderous--illusions, as you say.
