Just a quick little experiment using the ghost effect to light up my dark name on a dark background in a flash-light sort of simulation.

when it should of said 'mouse x' it said 'mouse x position' and it said 'is mouse down?' as opposed to 'mouse down?' ???????????????

Naive, but a good example to build a flashligth. I loved it
My son and I did yet another implementation (link to project) which uses no variables or broadcast messages.

Nate, this was a little experiment for the names gallery, the background is just my scribbled name. This project was my shot at creating a flashlight / spotlight illusion in Scratch

nice effect but it has a severe limitation: how would you display something that doesn't have the same color as the background?

Kevin, you're right, of course. It only works if the background is of the exact same color as the 'scene'. But there must be a way other than shoving masks about...
I like the use of a white sprite behind the lettering to simulate a flashlight. Using ghosting to get the greys is a good effect. Unfortunately, this trick would not work for lighting up a color scene on a black background.
