Can I Use Your Game Engine In A High Speed Chase Racing Game I Was Going To Make, It Will Have 3D Graphics And Everything! And If You Lose Or Win The Game The Credits Will Show Up And Your Name Will Be At The Top! Answer Me With A Comment So I Know Its Okay To Use Your Excellent Scripts With A Different Background And Different Sprites.
yes ok I know what you mean.
It's responsiveness (and top-speed, etc) is dependant on how powerful your PC is. I have to use a "ticker" to adjust the motion for each PC. When I have the time...
Ach. Scratch is so slow! It's nearly impossible to create a nice swift action game like this. I have had to revise my ambitions for this game because it's too slow with my modifications. I'll upload the new version soon, with most of the new things removed.
Yes - Googlemaps for the main map, with an invisible "mask overlay" for the collision-map, which I drew myself. When I get some time I will make a proper game out of it. I am starting to reach the limit of performance for Scratch, however.
Chalkmarrow made a project demonstrating AI in racing games (link to project)">(link to project) It seems like a pretty decent way to implement racing AI so maybe you could try it out.
Thanks Archmage, coming from you that means a lot ;)
The scripts to do the timing are already in the program - It's just a question of time to do the start-finish line and the other tasks to turn it into a proper game. I dont know about A.I. cars - I will probably have to cheat somehow and then there's the performance issue to consider.
14/03/2008 - Updated version - the yellow lines have been removed which were unrealistic. The whole game is much more "immersive" now. It takes time to learn the track - it's a hard game! I am quite impressed at how fast this runs, especially online. The online version plays differently because the car physics change due to the improved performance. I will have to tweak this in a later fix. Enjoy - please download and remix. I had so much fun working out how to do this. For downloaders: Try editing the "Set ghost effect to 100%" commands in the "MaskNorth" and "MaskSouth" sprites to "Set ghost effect to 50%" to see how the program works.
Download the 25 sprites and 89 scripts of "Motorway Racer" and open it in Scratch
Project Notes
Race around a short racetrack set in London. The scene is the beginning of the famous M1 motorway at Brent Cross in North London. Race your car around the track which has been made by knocking a hole in the central barrier.
Up Arrow : Accelerate
Down Arrow : Brake
Left Arrow : Steer Left
Right Arrow : Steer Right
This is game is still under development, though is substatially finished.
New version with no yellow track-lines.
This version looks so much better now that the overlay for the yellow side-lines has been removed, but it does run a little slower.
Now with a realtime stopwatch indicating the current elapsed time, lap-time and best-lap timings.
To Do: Better car physics. A.I. Cars. Sound. Reverse Gear. Some track modifications such as some missing tyre barriers. Other tracks based on satellite images. Fix Flyover. Tidy Start-Line. Many other fixes.
Images gathered from Google Maps. The car is taken from a photo of a toy.
Please leave a comment if you have any suggestions for improvements.
If you have played it for a while, learned the track and have improved your laptime, please take the time to go back to scratch.mit.edu and give me a "loveIt" - you now you should ;-)

(view all replies)good game , needs a reward system and possibly a more "defined" track

Scratchguy > I don't know what that is. Watch this space - I have done a lot of development on this game and it's nearly ready for a new release.

Thanks Archmage - an interesting link. I may find it useful to adapt Chalkmarrow's ideas to a scroller.

quite relistic tht u cnt turn at top speed
its good but i think you defintly need a reverse gear and you need to sort out the map bugs but i like :)
Drive-by's would be fun!!!
Good game so far. Track could be bigger, and car needs reverse. Also add a lap time, and it'll be great!
well good :D
Loves It!!!!!!!!!
Ha Ha gug game, wuld be kl if u can run ppl over.
Very good start, can see this developing into an interesting and fun game.
It actually seems to run better online!
