This project lets you play a small, text-only adventure pretty much like they did in the mid-70’s. It’s based on the original Colossal Cave adventure by Willie Crowther and Don Woods.
The program has built-in hints, help, and info. Be sure to use the down-arrow key instead of the Enter key.

(view all replies)It’s really a small list. You can enter all of the directions (each is a single command: N S E W NE NW SE SW U D). Or you can say "GO" and give it a direction. Other commands are: HELP LOOK YES NO INVEN TAKE GET DROP READ WAKE DRINK SCORE QUIT INIT INFO . Did the walkthrough not help any?
(view all replies)Just let the computer finish typing out its first message and when it prints the "?" prompt, press Y and then the down arrow. I think some people are trying to type while the program is still printing its messages and that is making it mess up. You can do commands like GET BOTTLE (down arrow), LOOK BOTTLE (down arrow), and DRINK BOTTLE (down arrow). Also, here is a walk-through of the game: (link to forums)

You’ve gotten it to do something that I would not have expected. The troll is not patient and what he wants after he wakes up has to already be waiting for him.

A save option would be really nice. I'm also hoping for the next release.

I like the way you can type stuff on it.. how do you do that?
I had to made a script for each letter that starts with "When [letter] key pressed". The letters are printed out – which is why the printing gets messed up if you start typing while the computer is printing a message. The print sprint has costumes of all of the letters and numbers and switches to the right costume and stamps itself. Thanks for playing.

very well done! The quality of the project's "continuity" shows how well programmed and thought out it is. my congratualtions :-) a suggestion would be to offer a list of things you can do in each scenario.

You are in a cave and the computer is your eyes and hands. You tell the computer what to do using commands of one or two words. Be careful to not start typing until the computer has finished printing out its messages and types the "?" prompt. You can figure out what you’re supposed to do as you play the game or you can just read the walk-through that is mentioned in the project notes.

Well, it was a hard project for me. It took several re-writes and, of course, is still not perfect. The input will get glitched if someone starts typing before the program is through printing out its response – but overall it works pretty well. I hope you’ll give it a try. if you press the down key every third of a second, it ends up saying HAT lol good game though!
I typed "Exit Cave" and he said "I don't know what a cave is." LOL
he's pretty dumb, he doesn't know how to pick something up!
and if i keep pressing the green flag its like "What? What? What?"
Clicking on the green flag causes it to process the command that you typed in. If you didn't type in a command it just says "what?" If you just started playing try reloading the game.

This is a really amazing project! It gets glitchy after a while though: the last thing it said was 'I dontccppccccccctttlloottttttttttttt is. ?'
I’ve only seen it have a problem like that when I would start typing before it was through printing. Of course since I did most of my checkout while running it offline it is possible that there is some issue with the Java player (online).
