This project lets you play a small, text-only adventure pretty much like they did in the mid-70’s. It’s based on the original Colossal Cave adventure by Willie Crowther and Don Woods.
The program has built-in hints, help, and info. Be sure to use the down-arrow key instead of the Enter key.

vrey cool, i was actually seeing what other txt-based games look like on scratch, cuz i'm workin on my own txt based game.
I just said that because i was replying to the person who said the project was "stupid, dumb, and idiotic." I was fighting against cyberbullying. Not doing it.

I don't understand it
I told it too pick both items up in these words:GRAB THEM BOTH and it said I don't know what them is then i insulted the game and it said:I DON't KNOW WHAT A ARE A IS so what the bleep.

reminds me of llama adventure... one cool thing they did (it would be really hard with this) is that keywords were highlighted as orange if they were a noun and I think purple if they were a verb if you could maybe find a way to underline them? anyways its really cool! make more!
That’s a good idea (marking the words that the program would recognize). Unfortunately it is so complex that I’d have a hard time going back into it to make modifications. Another text adventure will probably have to wait until Scratch adds more string functions. But it was fun to make. Thanks for playing.
Interesting... but i got confused... :( ? have you checked my new games(3 games, all the same except 1 has sound, an accident)called save the cheese!!! Only 1 glitch... Scratch is messing around with me!!!!!!!!

Using Basic would have made programming much easier. I wish that Scratch had better string and print capabilities. But I wanted to write it in Scratch because I knew that it would be a challenge. (And it was. I spent Way too much time on this project such that I had to drop out for a while and catch up on Life.)

I love text games. More than "normal" ones. Do you know what Inform 7 is? It's a computer program that can program text games.

Cool. Very nostalgic. I had a lot of fun playing this. This looks hard to program in Scratch (probably harder than programming it in FORTRAN on the PDP-10).
LOL! I think you might be right – it might have been easier in FORTRAN. It was a interesting challenge to make work. I’m glad you liked it.

Thanks for asking. I’m doing just fine. Scratch is one of my favorite hobbies but between learning how to program a little in Etoys and just keeping busy in general I have not active on Scratch lately. :-)

Hey you know that game you fixed my problem on. I just finished it. The reason it took a long time was because I quit scratch for a while. Anyway nice project. Heres the link to Spy Man (now called Ultimate Spy Game 3) (link to project)

Thanks for you wonderful reply. One of my best gaming memories is being carried by the elves in victory to the office. I wanted to go back into Colossal cave and, even though it was a challenge to do so in a Scratch project, I’m glad that I took the time to do it this way. I think several people have gotten something out of this new look at something old.

(view all replies)It’s really a small list. You can enter all of the directions (each is a single command: N S E W NE NW SE SW U D). Or you can say "GO" and give it a direction. Other commands are: HELP LOOK YES NO INVEN TAKE GET DROP READ WAKE DRINK SCORE QUIT INIT INFO . Did the walkthrough not help any?
(view all replies)Just let the computer finish typing out its first message and when it prints the "?" prompt, press Y and then the down arrow. I think some people are trying to type while the program is still printing its messages and that is making it mess up. You can do commands like GET BOTTLE (down arrow), LOOK BOTTLE (down arrow), and DRINK BOTTLE (down arrow). Also, here is a walk-through of the game: (link to forums)

You’ve gotten it to do something that I would not have expected. The troll is not patient and what he wants after he wakes up has to already be waiting for him.
