Yeah, so Blender started an in-house too- the programmers/3d artists designed it for their own needs, as programmers/3d artists, not for beginners to 3d. So that's its problem, yes it's difficult to just pick up and use, it's very different. But since it's open source, it's improving very fast, it's much better then what it was. they are working on making it more user friendly.
Yeah, they used Maya for Wall-e to model. But for the rest of it- (rigging, animation, lighting, particles, animation, rendering...) they used software they made- Geppetto, Marionett, Dynamo, RenderMan. In pixar, there are specialized artists and engineers that focus on those different parts of the production. They use in-house programs, so they don't need to be easy for beginners. Blender started out as an in-house tool too.
