Spin Me Template

<img src="http://scratch.mit.edu/static/projects/AddZero/406436_sm.png" width="148" height="111" border="1" alt="" />This project will let you make your own 3D Spinning Text remix.

(Please take a look at my "Spin Me!" project, if you haven't. http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/AddZero/406362)

I tried to make this as simple as possible. The goal is for this to work as an introduction to 3d graphics.

STEP 1: Download and install Blender, the free 3d program from http://blender.org

STEP 2: Download and open this blender Template file:
http://addzero.org/scratch/spin-me-template-for-scratch.blend
(Right-click Save As)

There's instructions inside on how to change the text and color and render the animation.

STEP 3: Download and open this project in Scratch. Delete this sprite. Use your file browser to find and select the jpeg files Blender made, then drag those files into the Scratch window. Save, Share, THAT'S IT!

STEP 4: Please let me know how this worked for you. Ok, now you're done. :-)

Please let me know if you get stuck, I want to help. Ask questions here: http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=14063

See how fast you can make it go!

SEE MY "Spin Me Template" TO REMIX:
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/AddZero/406436 It tried to make it so you can easily change the text and colors.
And put yours in the Spin Me Gallery:
http://scratch.mit.edu/galleries/view/40131

______________
How it works:

There are a bunch of images that are displayed depending on the rotation and velocity of the spin.
The slowest version of the spin has 64 frames, then when it goes faster, there are 32 frames that are slightly motion blurred, then 16 frames that are more blurred, then 8, then 4 that are very blurred.

I reused allot of the code from my spinning tank project.

I made the images with a free 3d program called Blender.
My template file automatically makes the spins and blurred frames, so It's easy to just change the text and colors.

I'll answer questions in the forum:
http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=92331

WARNING, Blender is fun, free and very powerful, but a very complicated program. I've been working with it for about 7 years and I don't know everything. Its interface can be hard to learn at first- it's very different.

But I tried to make customising your own spinner very easy, see the template: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/AddZero/406436

If you want to learn Blender, search for "Blender video tutorials" and "Blender forums" I can try to help too. You might be overwhelmed with Blender, that's ok. (It took me a couple years to be comfortable with it.)
If so, consider learning 3d with "Google Sketch-Up" first.

You can also click and drag up and down.

_____________
How I did it:

I made the animation using blender from blender.org it has a fluid simulator, so I made some text, converted it to a mesh object, set it as a fluid, then put it in the fluid 'domain' (a box around the objects where the fluid can be.) I did the same with the "DRY" text, but I called it a collision object, so water wont go through it. It can be challengeing to do this. see http://www.totallyblended.com/Tutorials.html

Please ask question if you have more questions or would like help.

midi music import- SMG

<img src="http://scratch.mit.edu/static/projects/AddZero/383557_sm.png" width="148" height="111" border="1" alt="" />This plays a song from Super Mario Galaxy using the "play note" block.

*Works when downloaded!*
*press green flag to start*

I made this to test importing a midi file into scratch.
Let me know how it works for you, and if it does work online for you.

Supports most basic midi features:
*multiple notes at once
*variable instrument per note. (user changeable too.)
*variable volume per note.
*tempo change
(note warp not possible)

Problems:
Slow/broken online. (I think limiting the number of array hits would help but would make the code harder to read.)
Does not play drum sets yet.

The file is imported from:
27500_Comet-Observatory.mid
The music is by Nintendo.
the midi was created by "usatraveler"
www.hamienet.com/midi27500_Comet"&gt;http://www.hamienet.com/midi27500_Comet … atory.html

How it works:
A sprite can play only one midi note at a time. So, this works by having a bunch of "player" sprites.

The "player feeder" assigns a note to play to the 1st player listed on the "available-players" list, then removes it from that list. (It keeps feeding till the "available players" is empty, then it waits till it's not.)

Each "player" sets its volume and instrument that was assigned it and waits till the timer is greater than its time to play then plays.
It then re-ads itself to the "available-players" list and waits for another note to be assigned to it.

The midi file was converted to the Cmedia file format (using Rose Garden (a Linux only program- there is likely Windows programs that can do this too), which is a text document that lists all the notes and when they play... I used a spreadsheet to convert the notes to note number and sort them by time. (They're grouped by instrument originally.)

Feel free to do whatever you like with this.

It runs faster in Scratch.

File Browser - Editable Tree List

<img src="http://scratch.mit.edu/static/projects/AddZero/346118_sm.png" width="148" height="111" border="1" alt="" />This is a tree structured list. A common use for this idea is in our file systems.
Not a game- but it could be useful for many types of games. And hopfull it's fun to browse and add things to. you can do so by clicking the buttons
You can also add new items, go into them and add more. yippee!

Bugs: Adding to the last item puts it on the root level.
Adding objects fast messes it up. I'll fix these soon.

To Do:
Delete items, will also remove child items.
Copy and paste items and their children.
Rename items

About:
I'm interested in genetic programming. ...where AI develops itself and learns to solve problems.

I need a way to store and easily re-sort and re-size lists of variables in a tree structure, like a file system. This tree will store decisions based on the AI's surroundings.

This tree structured list could be useful for many projects types of projects.

I started a fourm topic here:

Press your keyboard!

Space stops the songs.

You can use the tacks at the right of the tones to keep the buttons down.

Feel free to add/change songs, just change the notes in a song button sprite.

This shows how the tones on your phone works. Each tone is actually 2 tones put together.
