I wonder why Season 3 was so short, compared to the other two…

It appears the community has some very mixed feelings about Lesson Zero. I personally hold it as one of my favorite episodes, but other bronies seem to really dislike it.
veggie, since your opinion on the episode is probably the opposite of mine, would you like to explain what you didn't like so that I can better understand why Lesson Zero is so, for lack of a better term, “controversial”?

I think it's because they were working on the Equestria Girls movie. I wonder why Season 3 was so short, compared to the other two…

@poll: Probably Season 2. Great episodes all around. S3 comes very close as it did have some great episodes (Sleepless in Ponyville <333) and better production, but many more flops in comparison (Games Ponies Play, the Spike episodes, probably more).
I wonder why Season 3 was so short, compared to the other two…65 episodes are a traditional standard for first time syndication. Quick: 26 + 26 + 13? (also see Broadcast syndication in Wikipedia)

65 episodes are a traditional standard for first time syndication. So, that would mean they originally intended to end the show here before it got so popular?

I kind of don't get it… The show became popular way before Season 3… ^Most likely.

I can't decide between the first two seasons for which I prefer. The third comes in third; although it had some nice moments (oh my god I'm looking at you Sleepless in Ponyville), it didn't really compare (and was shorter). Plus no Rarity episode! :'(
I agree. Season 3 was good, but for some reason it just didn't measure up to the first two seasons.
I can't decide between the first two seasons either. Instinctively I choose season 1, but that may just be nostalgia goggles more than anything.

I'm going to put your names on both Season 1 and Season2 votes then.

Similar to the favorite Doctors of Doctor Who, I think a brony's favorite season is often the one that's currently running when they join. I gladly became a part of the herd during Season 2, and that might have had an impact on why I liked it better than S1. Of course, it helps that Season 3 was short too so it's harder for people to call it a favorite.

Ahhh. I think it's funny that you didn't like Lesson Zero, but hey, everyone has their own opinions and I can understand why you would dislike it. Personally I thought some of the moments in that episode were pure gold. (CLOCK. IS. TICKING!) I remember characters seeming OOC/unkind was a big sticking point for a number of S2 episodes, though I didn't think that Lesson Zero was too far off the mark in that regard.
A lot of my “nostalgia” (though the word seems a little silly in this context) for season 1 comes from the fact that I jumped in right near the end of that season, so I was around for the first between-season break, when that was all we had and the fanbase was still much newer. There was a lot of uncertainty about the future of the show; for a little while we weren't even sure it would continue.

Lesson Zero seemed quite different from most MLP:FiM episodes - I noticed this when I saw the Latin American dub on TV here. I don't remember any of the cast being out of character, but Twilight's descent into insanity was kind of scary if you think about it, though funny. I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself well?
Anyhow, the same reason why veggie and others might not like Lesson Zero, is exactly why I love it - it's out of the typical for a show for little girls, and even for FiM in particular. xP

At this point every character of the main cast has had some sort of nervous break, so I didn't see Twilight's madness as particularly shocking.

I remember when I had first watched Applebuck Season. I was so familiar with Big Macintosh's standard eeyups and nopes that I was all like “ERMERGERD he spoke normally!”. And then I had a similar feeling when he talked during Winter Wrap up. Sure, I had already known about the times when he broke out of character in Hearts and Hooves Day, and when he and Applejack switched their speaking patterns in Ponyville Confidential. But there was a reason for it both those times so it didn't surprise me quite as much as him speaking spontaneously during Season 1. Of course, this can be justified since him only saying two words wasn't considered a running gag yet.
