Diyath Yavin - New Single ("Waiting for the Sun to Come")

Coming under three months of my previous single’s release, “Waiting for the Sun to Come” is a folk song that discusses someone who is caught between a dreamer and a realist. It started out as an evening jam back in summer 2013, and the song was written and fully recorded within one day; the mixing process, however, was prolonged due to my focus on mixing and mastering other songs for my upcoming triple record. After a bit of fine-tuning on the mix, a few tweaks and a bit of EQ, I’m glad to share this song with all of you. This is my first single after the break-up of Frozen Coco, and I plan to devote all my music plans to my solo career only from now on, which means the forty-or-so songs in my album should be completed quicker than ever. Happy listening!

VERSE 1:
I like to think
My head is tossed upon the clouds
And they are ringing
My famed existence far out loud

VERSE 2:
A dreamer dares to dream
A singer starts to sing his song
And I'm just sitting
Waiting for the sun to come along

CHORUS:
It seems that my time is up
I finally must be leaving
It seems that I've lost the touch
I've got to keep believing

I'm waiting for the sun to come
Summer's right on its way
Waiting for the sun to come
I think I'm going to find a way

VERSE 3:
My mind is growing
A cloud collides with mountain tops
The rain keeps pouring
I do admit I've had enough

CHORUS:
It seems that my time is up
I finally must be leaving
It seems that I've lost the touch
I've got to keep believing

I'm waiting for the sun to come
Summer's right on its way
Waiting for the sun to come
I think I'm going to find a way

The song sounds pretty nice; the guitar is pretty fantastic and I love the organ(?) in the back. I still think you need to work on your singing, though, and the lyrics are kind of really generic.

Also, although I couldn't probably care less, you're probably going to get people complaining about the font on your album cover because it's a pretty generic overused one.

Yep, that is indeed an organ playing the backing on the chorus and interlude. Thanks for your constructive feedback.

As for the font, meh, you're probably right, but I don't mind.

OK cool, but do you have anything to say about the single itself?

Really the only thing that bothers me is that the singing isn't perfect, even though it's like really close, and far better than my capabilities. That and also the acoustic when it plays chords sounds too bright for my personal preference, but I can't expect you to like wait a few months for your strings to dull or wait a few years for your wood to settle in, depending on what kind of wood the guitar is made out of.

The guitar is a Yamaha FX370C acoustic that I got last year, so yes, it is new and yes, it has that bright Yamaha tone when unplugged. I recently gave up a 1950s Alhambra acoustic, so I use this one since my other option is a low-end acoustic that doesn't sound good on tape. Thanks for your feedback.

Oh, I just got a Yamaha FSX700SC. Brand new, and it's gorgeous. It is pretty bright though

Turns out I was way off the mark with the model I told I had in the previous post: I actually have a FJX 730SC BL folk guitar (I believe it is Yamaha's most recent series and their top-end acoustic model). I knew there was something wrong with the model I stated previously, as it is less than half the price of this one.

It was a pleasant song, but the guitar sounded a little too compressed.

Your vocals are an improvement over previous records, but still sounds awkward in places.

I don't think “compressed” is the right description. In fact, this one had no compression applied during production at all, much unlike many of my other upcoming or released songs, nor does the recording suggest anything of the sort to me. Like mentioned by another, it is bright, yes, but you're probably confusing the term “compressed” for that.

No, I'm not confusing the term “compressed” for that, I know what the term means. However the acoustic guitar's dynamic range doesn't sound natural to me. Since you say that you did not apply any artificial compression, it's most likely caused by your recording setup, and/or how your guitar sounds in real life.

The guitar track was recorded unplugged, picked up by a condenser mic. Condenser mics are more sensitive and responsive than dynamics, making them capture subtle nuances in a sound. When the effect compression is applied, it reduces the volume of loud sounds or amplifies quiet sounds by narrowing or “compressing” an audio signal's dynamic range. I definitely hear the original dynamics in the guitar sound as it was recorded, with no effects added. Since a condenser does nothing with regard to compression (essentially two very different things), there is no compression involved in the process.

Soundcloud and Bandcamp do however compress the audio file to 128kbps, which results in an audible loss of dynamic range.

Like I said, I know what compression is, and you already told me you didn't apply any artificial compression. I own and use a condenser microphone myself so no need to explain what it is. If you say the guitar sound was recorded accurately, then ok. I was just stating my opinion

I know you were just stating your opinion, and I was just trying to correct it since I know exactly what went on in the mixing and recording process (unlike you), so you don't need to try to prove me wrong.

Also, don't take this personally, but it is very possible you're confusing some terms as I've noticed your mixes often contain multiple deficiencies and imbalances, leading me to believe you don't really know the adjustment of values necessary. Not to say my mixes are flawless, but I think I've greatly improved with time, in contrast to a couple of years ago.

Hey all - I was looking through my Facebook this evening, and it turns out that this single got airplay from a radio station in Surrey!

You can listen to the entire broadcast here. My song starts around the 50 minute mark, and it is the penultimate song in the line-up.
