Half-Life

Discuss the Half-Life games, which most people (including myself) consider to be one of the (if not the) greatest video games of all time.

(and by the way, no HL3 spam, there's already a topic for that)

Half-Life

I'm on chapter 8 of Half-Life, chapter 5 of Opposing Force, chapter 6 of Blue Shift, and chapter 3 of Half-Life 2. As you can tell I'm bad at finishing games before starting the next.

Uhh… I've been wondering…

What is Half-Life?

I actually wanted to bring myself to watch LP's about it but forgot

A first person shooter developed by Valve and released in 1998. It revolutionized the way stories are told in video games and was greatly received. It had two expansions: Half-Life: Opposing Force (1999) and Half-Life: Blue Shift (2001). In 2004, Half-Life 2 was released which revolutionized the way stories are told in video games again. Half-Life 2: Episode 1 and Half-Life 2: Episode 2 were later released and we are still waiting for Half-Life: Episode 3 or Half-Life 3, whichever comes first. Half-Life also has two spin-offs: Portal and Portal 2, which are first-person puzzle games released in 2007 and 2011, respectively.

Half-Life and its expansions ran on the Goldsrc engine, which is a heavily modified version of the Quake engine. It was very open to modifications, a few were acquired by Valve and made into retail products. Some notable examples are Counter-Strike (1999), Team Fortress (1999) and Day of Defeat (2003).

It is a video game series of the FPS/FPP genre, published by Valve. The series follows the rise and fall of two rival science corporations, Aperture Science and Black Mesa, and experiments they performed that had gone horribly wrong. The games by the title “Half-Life” follow protagonist Gordon Freeman (and others, such as Barney Calhoun and Adrian Shepard) as he tries to escape Black Mesa's alien overrun facility, is put into stasis, and wakes up years in the future when the earth had been invaded by similar aliens. The “Portal” subdivision of the series covers one of Aperture's test subjects as she tries to escape from the facility, taken over by an AI the company's scientists had been working on.

I don't consider the Portal series part of the Half-Life series, as it doesn't have the same characters, gameplay, or locations. I'd call it a spin-off because it's in the same universe as Half-Life but not a direct entry in the series.

It's really hard to get past the Water Hazard chapter of Half-Life 2 with 4 FPS all the time :(

A science fiction first person shooter that is amazing.

Go watch an LP, or better yet, play it!

I meant the series in general.

Half-Life is a PC-only game, you can get the original 1998 game on Steam for around $10.

The second one is about the same price but there are multiple “episodes” that come after it.

There's also a PS2 version, but I've heard it's pretty awful. It was also going to come out for the Sega Dreamcast, but the Dreamcast was discontinued. Blue Shift was originally going to be extra content for the Dreamcast version, so they just released it as an expansion.

It's not a spin-off, nor is it a part of the series.
It's simply in the same universe.
They're parallel.
