Is recoloring against the scratch guidelines?

I've been hearing a lot of scratchers don't like recoloring and want to stop it. . They sometimes comment bad things on recolors. Is recoloring bad?

No, recoloring is not against the community guidelines, as long as there is credit given.

If you give credit, it's fine. If you don't give credit, then you might be in trouble.

Some scratchers such as @-SkyStar- don't like it when people just recolor their projects. They feel as if it's not enough changed in the project and that you are basically just stealing the project. As long as you give credit though, you are fine. (And those certain scratchers will probably be fine with it)
Also, the link that's automatically inputted into a remix that brings you to the original project is NOT enough credit.

That actually technically is enough credit, but sometimes, people (like me) prefer that you take the effort to write in the Notes and Credits.

I also think it's polite to respect a person if they say “do not recolour” at all. Some Scratchers like to put their art here, and aren't happy about artwork being used like colouring books.
Technically recolours are allowed, because artwork is being put onto projects, which can be changed and remixed, but keep this in mind unless you want to upset people.

According to the rules, it really doesn't matter if some one says “do not recolor at all”. I know that sounds a bit harsh, but it's nothing more than the truth.

There's nothing anyone can do to prevent you from recoloring. It's within your rights. Anything shared on Scratch is under a license that you legally accept as soon as you hit the “Share” button. So it would, technically, actually be illegal to prohibit recoloring.

When you took someone's sprite or backdrop and then add your own colors, or change the colors.

The guidelines contain being respectful :3 Would you get banned for being respectful?

It's not against the community guidelines as long as you give credit, but some Scratchers don't like their art recoloured. I'd suggest asking for their permission first.
